The pressure balanced expansion joints
General
They are designed with several bellows where the effective area of the balancing bellows is twice that of the line bellows. The pressure thrust forces cancel acting across the tie rods attached to the tie flanges. The anchors are only loaded by the displacement forces in expansion joints.

These expansion joints can accept full axial movements without loading the anchors with the pressure thrust.

Pressure balanced axial expansion joints with elbow
This type of bellows can be used at the change of direction of pipe. Elbow pressure balanced assembly is designed to accept axial and lateral movements of piping systems. Furthermore it absorbs pressure thrust and cancels acting across the tie rods attached to the tie flanges. Pressure balanced axial expansion joints are usually used as connection on flanges of turbines, pumps or compressors where minimum forces and moments are required.
